Case Study: Conserving Wildlife—How a Telescopic Pole Helps The Barn Owl Trust

At Composite Poles, we take great pride in developing telescopic solutions that doesn’t just perform reliably in demanding environments, but also contributes to meaningful work. One recent collaboration with The Barn Owl Trust highlights how a carefully designed solution can directly support wildlife conservation.

The Challenge

The Trust carries out regular nest inspections as part of its conservation efforts. Traditionally, this task required ladders and close proximity to the owls’ nestboxes. While effective, the process carried two drawbacks:

  • Safety risks for the conservation team when working at height.

  • Potential disturbance for the owls during inspection.

The goal was clear: Create a pole system that would allow nestboxes to be checked safely from the ground, while reducing stress on the birds.

The Solution

Working with the Trust, our product development team adapted one of our lightweight GXTEL telescopic poles. Known for their strength-to-weight ratio and ease of handling, these poles provided the perfect foundation.

To meet the Trust’s specific needs, we developed a bespoke L-shaped angled mount designed to securely hold a GoPro camera. This simple but effective modification enabled the camera to be positioned at just the right angle for a clear internal view of the nestbox.

The Result:

  • Ground-level inspection with no ladders required.

  • Minimal disruption to the owls thanks to remote viewing.

  • Practical, lightweight operation for conservation staff in the field.

View the case study video below for a detailed look at the solution in practice.
